The "Calcutta"

What is it?

Since British colonial times, the Calcutta has been a fun way to add an extra level of excitement and friendly wagering to various kinds of sporting events. Quite simply, it's a type of auction, where participants "bid" on the outcome of a sporting event (e.g. Melbourne Cup, NFL Superbowl, US Open, whatever).

NOTE: This year we are running our official Calcutta on the Invitational Teams Event. This means participants will be bidding on which TEAM will win the tournament. These teams will have had an opportunity to meet and collaborate prior to the Calcutta thanks to our inaugural Teams Ambrose Event on Sunday 28 September.

How it works:

  1. The Calcutta Auction will be held on Monday 28 September, commencing 6pm at our Home Base, where there will be food, drinks and other entertainment

  2. Any person (or syndicate of people) may bid to become "owner" of any team being auctioned.

  3. Prior to the auction, teams may optionally decide to become collective "shareholders" in themselves, for a percentage amount upto a MAXIMUM 50% of the eventual winning bid.

  4. This decision must be made and announced on the official tournament Whatsapp group PRIOR to the start of the auction (a good suggestion might be for the team to decide this during our Ambrose event on the previous day)

  5. The minimum auction starting bid for each team (regardless of ownership %) is 8,000 Pesos

  6. The Calcutta prize disbursements will occur at our official Tournament Presentation Evening, Friday October 3, according to the following distribution:

    • 50% of pool to owners of the winning team

    • 30% of pool to owners of the runner-up team

    • 15% of pool to owners of the 3rd placed team

    • 5% of pool to our wonderful friends & charity partners at RSL Angeles

  7. The Auctioneer is appointed by the TOC, and his decisions shall be final and binding

  8. ALL payments must be made IN CASH, IN FULL BY THE TEAM OWNER to the appointed treasurer on the evening of the auction. NO part-payments will be accepted.

  9. The entire auction will be run "live" on an audited spreadsheet, for transparency and accuracy.

  10. The TOC may decide to vary any of the rules in the interests of fun, fairness and transparency.
